werkbundsiedlung wiesenfeld

Winning design scheme for Werkbundsiedlung Wiesenfeld Munich, Germany

The German Werkbund, as an organisation which prominently was concerned about the conditons of life, building and design of Modern industrial culture, in 2005 issued a most challenging competition brief. Again after 1923 the foundation was seeking for a project that reflects on the future of building culture.

With the ‘Villa Urbaine’ our office has developed a GREEN BUILDING prototype of an urban setting, of common urban space and large courtyard houses, that connects urban density with the desire for private green outside space. The German Werkbund is besides the Bauhaus the most prominent design organisation following the ideology of the modern project.

Most prominently the Werkbund initiated the Weissenhofsiedlung in 1923: Peter Behrens, Walter Gropius, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Hans Poelzig, Hans Scharoun, Max Taut and others, have been building a utopian modern housing quarter.

As an organisation which prominently was concerned about the conditons of life, building and design of Modern industrial culture, in 2005 issued a most challenging competition brief. Again after 1923 the foundation was seeking for a project that reflects on the future of building culture.

The competition brief asked a complex set of questions, circulating aroud the changing conditions of our societal and cultural agenda. How will we work and life in the future, as a community and as individuals? How can the ecology of building, become the impuls for new patterns of communal living?

With the `Villa Urbaine’ our office has developed a GREEN BUILDING prototype of an urban setting, of common urban space and large courtyard houses, that connects urban density with the desire for private green outside space.

Similarly to our self understanding in handling our clothes, the houses becomes responsive to seasonal change. While the common garden yard with its climate performance and loggias maximize their surface during summer, the exposed building surface during winter is reduced to a necessary minimal extension while providing fresh air and substituting air conditioning in the summer.
